RCIA Welcomers
As part of the Apostolist community at St. Paul the Apostle, we have many opportunities to reach out to others. Have you considered the calling to welcome those who are interested in the Catholic faith? St. Paul's RCIA program is inviting you to share your story with those who may want to convert. Below you'll find a message from Fr. Bob Collins, S.J., the director of our RCIA program asking our young adult community to be welcomers. Consider the calling.
...When people come to St. Paul's to decide whether to become Catholics, they begin by meeting as a group once a week with "regular" Catholics to talk with them, ask questions and learn from them what it's all about. This goes on for about 6 to 8 weeks, depending on how much time the inquirers need. Most of them are young adults, and I think many of you, as young adult parishioners at St. Paul's, are well qualified to help them. The flyer attached to this e-mail message will give you a more detailed description of what's involved. Please don't overlook the section toward the bottom headed "What's in it for you?"
Farther down in this message you can read what some young adults who participated recently had to say about their experience. If you think this is for you, or would like to talk about it a bit before deciding, please get in touch with Father Bob Collins (daytime: 212 515 0119; e-mail: robert.collins@stpaultheapostle.org; on Facebook as "Robert Collins" ). Or you can find me after the 10 a.m. Sunday Mass at St. Paul's. I usually hangout near the door giving out the weekly bulletin (gray hair, glasses, not a man in black). The first meeting will be on Wednesday, Sept. 3, so please don't delay to get in touch.
"Serving as a welcomer in the inquiry sessions at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle was a very blessed experience for me. My own faith life was strengthened by being on the journey with the inquirers learning about Christ and the Church. I looked forward to our Wednesday evening sessions as a chance to pause, study and reflect. It also was a great privilege to later be a Confirmation sponsor for one of the candidates."
Paul Snatchko, sponsor, Easter 2008
"Not simply the means to becoming 'Catholic', the RCIA readings and discussions provided me with a much-needed formula for bringing reflection and worship into my week. My joy in a shared Christian faith developed within our group in ways that I could not achieve alone."
Kjersti Schmitz, received into the Catholic Church, Easter 2008
"I came to New York nine months ago in search of something. I went to Columbia to be a better reporter; but the true value of justice I discovered here, along with compassionate people. My sponsor was right: I do smile a lot more now; and I have nothing but gratitude for the people who helped change me for the better."
Jack Gillum, received into the Catholic Church, Easter 2007
